On 19 October Mountain Green Archery Club hosted the District Doubles Trophy Challenge. This was a fun tournament where archers chose their pairing (friends, parent/child, couples, siblings). To level the playing field, only wooden bows (no sights) were allowed. Some archers chose to bring their own, while others borrowed club equipment.

The day was clear and beautiful on the maunga. There was a ranking round of 30m and 20m, whereupon everyone stopped for lunch while our admin team tallied up the scores and prepared the matchplay. Many of the competitors had never shot a team matchplay before, so it was a great experience for them.

There was a practice match, before we kicked into the real match play, with some dramatic results. Team Stormtroopers (father and son team Ayn and Izaiah Benitez) got all the way through to the bronze medal match with some amazing shooting, only to be beaten at the last by Team Ass Kicking for Goodness (Richard Lin and Yami Hung).

The gold medal match was between River Rats (Jenni Donald and Murray Prowse) and John with the Wind (John Deck and John Way), who kept it interesting by shooting so evenly they made it to a shoot-off! Everyone was very excited and there was lots of cheering, especially by the home crowd as they supported the “Johns” whose home club was Mountain Green.

With two tens to a ten and an 8, John with the Wind were the winners of the Sugar Bowl, and a successful day was had by all.

Thank you to all our volunteers (the boys on the BBQ, Kate as DoS, Fleur and Caro as organisers) – we hope to do this again next year.
