It was a very windy day around the country when the target archery clubs in New Zealand participated in the Royle Hutton Memorial tournament.
This is a special tournament in honour of Royle Hutton, who was a member of Archery NZ and passionate about bringing archer to all ages, especially the young. He is credited with the development of junior target archery in New Zealand.
Shot on February 6 (Waitangi Day) by any target archery club in New Zealand, the shoot is an unusual one. The tournament is a “postal” tournament – archers can shoot at their own club, pay only $3 to enter, and shoot the round at any time of the day. Once shooting starts, the round must be completed. All scores are submitted (posted!) to Archery New Zealand, who coordinate the results and send out medals to the winners.
The round shot is called a “Burton” – in honour of another great New Zealand target Archer, William Burton of Gisborne, who was one of our greatest archers. The round is 30 arrows at 55m, 46m and 37m (or 60, 50, 40 yards) on a 122cm target, with a total of 900 points to be won.
Auckland clubs did very well this year, despite the weather being very windy all around the country! Here are some notable results:
Isaac Ellery and Elizabeth Ellery-Siaosi from Mountain Green (in Mt Albert) cleaned up their divisions of Junior Men Compound and Senior Women Compound. Dave Manning of Mountain Green took second in the Masters Men Recurve division, and Chayse Martin-Roberts took the gold in the Junior Men Recurve.
From the Auckland Club (in One Tree Hill), Bilqis Hague came second in the Junior Women Recurve, Max Wilson third in the Junior Men Recurve, and Andrew Russell third in the Senior Men Compound.
From our other clubs, Josephine Martin, of Mercury Bay Archery Club, came second in the Masters Women Recurve.
We’re very proud of all our archers and hope that next year more clubs and more archers participate in this very friendly shoot.
